I am a huge supporter of the use of solar power. However, installing panels on a home which is 23 years of age may not be the best idea. Solar panels are not the end all to our energy problems or the solution to reduceing energy cost on your residence. Prior to installation it is highly recommended that you invest in an energy audit of your home. This audit will out line the deficiencies in the envelope which are aiding to the higher cost. These deficiencies must be addressed first before investing in solar panels or leasing solar panels. I fully believe sustainable energy solutions need to be integrated during the initial design phases of a project and must be viewed as a holistic approach verses a stand alone solution.

Asked by J. LopezI see many companies that offer a site inspection, quote, and $0 down/ leasing options for solar panels to be installed on exsisting homes. This seems like a tempting option for home owners who may not have the money up front to outright instal solar on their homes, but what to lower costs and make greener choices for their property. Is this too good to be true?
