One gains no better experience with green design as in working for yourself.

Ten years ago, moving to Austin, I bought a 20 year old home that had $500 per month electric bills. WIthin 30 days, we remodeled the home with extensive improvements to insulation, HVAC equipment, duct sealing, double pane windows, insulated doors, pool equipment updates and timers, sprinkler audits and timers, and interior improvements to make the electric bill under $150 at peak summer months.

Since that time, my projects have included Austin Energy 5 star green rated residences, commercial renovations with green finishes, Retrofit of a Commercial church into a commercial banking facility, dining establishments, retail establishments, spa facilities and other smaller renovations that allowed for me to focus on energy-efficient environmental solutions for the designs.
The emphasis on waste management was crucial not only to the budget but also for environmental toxins, so drywall was ground up and spread on the yard, wood framing was reused in the new design, cabinets were deconstructed and Habitat Restore resold them. New building products were procured from Habitat restore such as sinks and tiles.

Recent projects have allowed me to learn about Universal Design for clients and provide homes that are designed for aging in place. I haved shared my experience with community groups on Universal Design Smart Solutions and ReBuilding Green. Our next project will include net-zero design for professional office spaces.
