CBT is a Boston-based professional design firm providing green home services in architecture and interior design. Designing a private home requires an ability to shape forms and spaces that respond to personal requirements and aspirations. Our home owners present their ideas, wishes and needs, and we translate them into structures, spaces and environments that express those personal visions. The process is truly a collaborative effort between CBT and the owners.
Our approach to sustainable design is expressed as a balanced pursuit of economic efficiency, environmental symbiosis and social benefit. We site, design and construct homes to be full lifecycle models of water, energy and material value, providing healthy, productive and comfortable indoor environments for the homeowners. We observe the 34 criteria of the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design) Building Rating System® as functional benchmarks of design.
With 52 LEED-certified professionals on our staff CBT offers expertise in the following:
• Green construction materials and methods
• Appropriate energy systems
• Water quality and conservation land regeneration and permaculture systems analysis
• Facilitating the integrated design process
CBT has designed nine projects that are LEED certified, three that are pending certification and over 30 projects that are LEED targeted or equivalent.
For our projects, the development of sustainable design strategies begins when a project is conceived. By integrating sustainable design practices into the entire process from programming to construction, sustainable development goals can be effectively realized. Sensitive to the interdependence of environmental, social and financial impact, the architect and homeowner together establish realistic prioritization of concerns and solutions. By doing so, maximum potential can be realized through an all-inclusive approach.
CBT has been committed to sustainable design for many years and has made significant strides in integrating green principles into the firm’s business philosophy and culture. In 2003, CBT established a Sustainable Design Committee to assist the principals and staff in becoming more aware of sustainable design practices and the LEED rating system. Today, there are 52 LEED Accredited Professionals representing 38% of CBT’s employees. CBT continually supports education and training to increase and update staff knowledge with regard to green efforts and to inspire them to embrace sustainable design. The Sustainable Design Lecture Series, CBT Green Day and LEED Study Groups are just a few examples of initiatives used to raise awareness and enhance the firm’s expertise.
Additionally, CBT’s approach to designing the most energy efficient, high performance buildings has recently been enhanced by the purchase of two pieces of innovative energy modeling software, IES and Ecotech. The software enables us to design and develop projects that set the standard for low-energy, high-performance buildings. Energy modeling software, which has traditionally been used more by engineers, provides detailed building performance and energy modeling information. By using it to measure architectural concepts early on in the design process – well before key design decisions are made – CBT can model the impact of different options on building performance to incorporate sustainable, low-energy strategies into the entire design process, providing homeowners with a wider array of potential strategies for sustainability and efficiency.
