Remodeling homes with architectural sensitivity is our specialty. We have worked on houses designed by some of the great names in Bay Area architecture: Frank Lloyd Wright, Julia Morgan, Bernard Maybeck, John Hudson Thomas, John Galen Howard, Willis Polk, and Walter Ratcliff.
My belief that building is a cooperative social activity more than a mechanical one is at the center of every important decision my company makes. It's the way we listen to each other, help and teach one another, and recognize the possibilities inherent in another point of view that has created the quality company we've become. The development of my employees and the fact that customers come back to my company time and again, all flow from a company culture that focuses on maintaining relationships.
I come from a ranch background where if something needed to be built, you built it. My first independent remodeling and design project was a studio for myself in high school. I still think it is one of my better projects. Wood boat building, remodeling and work in a lumber yard preceded my coming to Berkeley to complete a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology. After a decade in Educational Research and Development, I returned to my passion, building. I was a hands-on builder doing most of the trades myself. Helpers turned into full time employees and a business was born in 1979. While my interest in Developmental Psychology remains (a third edition of a coauthored book came out in 2003) my passion is building.
