Aerie Design is a member of the local Chamber of Commerce's “Green Force” sustainability committee. Owner Blyth McManus has also served as speaker and facilitator for local organizations on the benefits of green design and holistic design, as well as serving as a facilitator for a national sustainability project with a credit union consortium. Blyth participated in the “REGREEN” sustainability training program for residences, co-sponsored by USGBC and ASID. AS part of normal business practices, Aerie Design uses recycled office products, compact fluorescent bulbs, and also recycles office paper and office waste created in the course of business. For example, fabric samples and scraps are donated to a local textile artisan for reuse in support the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Services to clients include using design principles to reduce energy requirements in the home or business, as well as assist with finding low impact and allergy friendly solutions to design problems.
Sustainability is a natural way of life for Blyth. Her parents lived in Berkeley, CA in the 1960s, and brought a living approach to environmentalism with them when they moved back east. Raised to think that composting and recycling were normal behaviors, Blyth has enjoyed a lifelong commitment to environmental awareness.
In addition to her professional commitment to sustainability, Blyth's home is a Certified Wildlife Habitat through the National Wildlife Federation program and she is currently pursuing her certification in Permaculture Design.
