Will air purifiers remove VOCs emitted during the paint drying process (for latex paint)? How about VOCs from new carpet?

My family and I are moving into an apartment (in an old school building) that was recently repainted. The carpet was also replaced. Also, the bedrooms are on the lower level. They are below ground (somewhat -- it's not a typical basement) but there are several windows, so the rooms can be ventilated.
