How do I dispose of broken CFL bulbs?

Asked by E Newcomer

Seems everywhere I read how to dispose of spent bulbs, not those that have broken glass. How concerned should I be that they were in my house several weeks before I discovered they were broken?

Sweep up the broken glass carefully while wearing a particle mask and gloves and bag it up so as not to allow the pieces to spread.

  • Then you can follow the EPA guidelines listed on their website here.
  • Also, the EPA publishes a page of detailed advice for cleaning up a broken CFL here.

Hope it helps! Thanks for thinking about the environment and your safety.
