What is the best kitchen flooring material? I have cats and dogs.
The floor will go over concrete and the cabinets will go on top of the new floor
Installing any flooring over concrete you must be careful to check for moisture leeching into the space through the floor.
- An easy test is to place a 12" x 12" piece of visqueen or saran wrap over the concrete floor and tape the edges down with duct tape.
- If moisture is present you will see formation of water droplets and this will limit the type of material and application over the concrete floor.
Since you have mentioned that you have both cats and dogs my recommendation is install a tile or stone floor. In the past I have had two dogs so I have seen firsthand the wear caused by their nails on my hardwood floor.
Tile or stone will work well for a couple of reasons.
- It will cleanup easily incase of a pet accidents
- Because of its durability, it works well in high traffic areas, and resists wear from aminal nails.
