What is the best choice for basement heating? I was thinking about vent free natural gas?
60's style block basement. semi finished and wanting to use half the day.

I am glad you asked first and didn't just buy one as that is the WORST thing you can use in a basement. While a ventless heater will heat a room, it's main by-product is moisture.
The best choice for a heater is proper insulation, air-sealing and having a HVAC contractor do a proper Manual J and D on your house which should include the basement.
Depending on your situation, goals, etc they might just recommend electric baseboard heaters, tying into the existing systems, adding a mini-split system, or...
