If you are specifically looking for a stain and clear finish, my best recommendation is to use AFM Durostain and AFM Acrylacq. Both products are very low-VOC, but more importantly, they are the least toxic wood finishes on the market.

AFM Safecoat has been making paints, primers, stains and coatings for folks with allergies, asthma and chemical sensitivities for almost 30 years. All of their products are designed with human health in mind first and foremost. And if durability, longevity, and application ease are also concerns, these products will really impress you.

You might find a local dealer on the AFM website, but if not, feel free to contact me and I'll help you out. Good luck with your project!
