Question

We're having difficulty finding green materials for a screened porch. Suggestions?

Builders in our area seem to offer PVC, vinyl, pressure treated wood, and Brazilian hardwood. All sound bad for the environment. What are we missing? We have budget constraints and about a year until we start. Many thanks

Answer

Susan,

If this is a custom screen porch I would recommend looking into using a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) rated western red cedar or if available redwood for the framing and panel frame material.

After time you will have to give the screen porch some love but due to the woods natural properties it will withstand the beating it gets from the elements.

Now if you have architectural plans for this screen porch, you can have the screen porch manufactured as a kit prior to installation.

  • If this is the case contact Nancy at RJ Raven Corp a custom millwork shop out of Grand Rapids Michigan.
  • You can review their gallery at www.rjraven.com.
  • I have used them for all of my custom wood doors and recently for screen panels on a custom home which is currently under construction.
