Should I get vinyl replacement windows or use plastic sheeting over my existing windows?

Which would be more efficient at stopping heat loss through my windows -- 1) replacement vinyl windows, or 2) 3M plastic sheeting over the existing single-pane glass windows?

Installing new windows will increase your house’s resale value. About half of central heating is lost through doors and windows, so buyers typically gravitate toward houses with quality windows.

Look for energy efficient windows to keep your house warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer; this can create a big savings on utility bills. If you have the extra budget, you can go for custom windows, tubular skylights or UV protection glazing application.

Replacement windows are more efficient and durable than 3M plastic sheeting. Double- and triple-glazed windows, or those filled with argon gas, increase energy savings but bump the cost to the higher end of the scale. Replacing non-standard-sized windows requires either custom windows or enlarging the old opening to accommodate a larger standard size, which can up costs by 50-100 percent per window.
