Question
My new apt. has inefficient electric heaters plugged directly into outlets. What can I replace these with without redoing the whole system?
We've just bought a new loft and the heating is ghastly inefficient (and hard on the wallet) with individual electric heaters (that look like steam/hot water radiators) plugged into electrical outlets. I need to replace these with something much more efficient, although we don't have the money to install radiant heating (nor solar of any kind as it's in an apartment block). Are there any electrical heaters we can get that are actually efficient?
Answer
There is a heat pump that they call a mini-split system. These are small 2-way A/C units. Basically you run it backwards in the winter to heat the apartment. Mitsubishi makes a nice one that I have experience with, but there are many others that offer similar equipment.
