Question
Is there a clear coating/sealant for indoor brick to avoid getting dirty when you brush up against it?
I brushed/vacuumed - no luck. Looks like it used to be outdoor brick before they added on. We don't want to paint it. I read cleaning it is a toxic mess.
Answer
Jim,
There are plenty of products on the market that will seal brick to prevent clothing, pets, etc from getting dirty when you come in contact with the brick.
I assume up front that the only issue is with brick dust. There are no leaks on the wall or drafts etc. In this case, the major item to look at is the Volatile Organic Compound or "VOC" content of any product you'd be using indoors. Most likely you'll hope to avoid exposure to toxic chemicals as the sealant dries over time.
With that in mind, I would recommend a product called MetaCreme that has a great warranty, is available in the Boston area, and is VOC compliant with USGBC's LEED standard.
- Have a look at a DryTreat's MetaCreme for use on multiple surfaces.
- Test a small area to be sure you'll be happy with a bit of a glossy look.
- Be sure to change rollers frequently as you apply the sealer and wait until the surface is completely dry between coats.
- Don't be afraid to use a brush along the grout lines.
Good luck on your project.
