Question
How long does Kilz oil-based primer take to complete off-gassing V.O.C.s?
We've applied Kilz oil-based primer to our subfloor prior to installing a pre-finished hickory hardwood floor. We do have an Air-wise air filter that we are currently using; the last coat of Kilz went down today, and the floor will be done tomorrow. How long before we can feel safe that the Kilz is done off-gassing? This last coat is of special concern because it is in our 8 year old daughter's bed room, and we don't want to expose her (or ourselves) to any toxins we don't have to.
Answer
Dear Yohai,
The duration for off-gassing is very hard to estimate. It will be determined by several factors such as:
- interior temperatures,
- humidity and
- air circulation.
The best advice is to provide as much ventilation as possible by opening windows and to use your nose - wait to lay the hardwood floor until you can't smell the Kilz anymore.
If you are under a time constraint, you can consider applying a sealant such as AFM Safecoat's Safe Seal or Hard Seal. You might want to contact AFM to determine which product is optimal for your situation.
Good luck!
