How does fiber cement siding compare to other siding? Is reclaimed wood better?

We are building a new home in Maine and would like to be green and energy efficient. Our builder likes high-quality vinyl, but we'd rather be more green.

Fiber cement siding is a very sustainable product as it requires very little maintenance and will last a very long time.

  • The siding itself is generally sold with a 50 yr guarantee against rot, insects and even coastal salt damage.
  • The paint will need to updated every decade or so.

As I look at what makes a product Green, I look at life-span and how it is maintained over that life span, first. Fiber Cement wins that battle over wood in my book.
