How can I buy furniture that is safe from chemicals?

we just purchased two new recliners, sofa three weeks ago. furniture sending off odor that makes my nose/throat burn/wheezing. can't stay in room longer than 15 mins. store willing to take back and give store credit for another selection. how can we avoid making another mistake? don't know if smell is coming from the wood, padding or fabric.

So sorry to hear of your stinky purchase. If you want to purchase new try going to the Sustainable Furnishings Council website where you can find manufacturers and retailers who specialize in sustainably manufactured products.

Another option would be to purchase used furniture at a consignment shop or other similar outlet.

  • Older furniture may have already off gassed what ever toxic substances they were produced with.
  • You could also consider purchasing used furniture for the frame and have it reupholstered with natural latex or wool fillings and organic fabrics.
