Question
Can bamboo flooring work in very dry, desert-like environments?
I live in the mountains at about 7,000 feet. We have a very dry and desert-like environment here. I have been told that bamboo flooring is not a good option up here unless I can maintain 30% humidity or more in my home. I would like to know if this is true or if there is a bamboo flooring product that would work here.
Answer
Linda,
We are based in Cache Valley, Utah, at almost 5,000 feet. It is dry here also, but what works here might not work for you.
We have had good luck with Teragren, but we open every package and cross-stack the boards, allowing them to dry to <10% moisture by pin meter. Sometimes this takes a couple of weeks.
Shop contractors and find one who is successfully installing the floor you want. If no one is doing it, there is a reason.
I personally prefer a locally harvested real wood floor that I can sand and finish after installation.
